Learn Cinema 4D in the classroom

By | C4D, event, jobs, news | One Comment

If you have ever tried to learn something from youtube, or you have tried to follow along with somebody you probably have run out of momentum at some point. While it’s great that you can pause and rewind, you still need to be able to see and understand what is going on, for you to gain confidence in taking those skills yourself. That is where classroom based learning comes in. Being able to watch somebody, while they explain is a good way to build a solid understanding but the ability to then ask questions and discuss why those choices are…

Trojan Horse was a Unicorn – 3

By | event, masters of cg, news, Uncategorized | No Comments

Much of the week has been about mentoring, with top flight artists spending time with a group of menthes, learning not just about process but about reasoning, experience and developing as an artist. This is a part of what makes THU magic and you won’t find it anywhere else.   One of my personal highlights has been Victor Hugo, who has been one of my favourite artists for some time now. He produced a surprise animation, which I posted earlier in the week, named “The Manifesto’; a tribute to the speakers and with many easter eggs for the keen eyed….

Trojan Horse was a Unicorn – 2

By | event, masters of cg, news | No Comments

The partying continued last night, with most attendees staying at the casino until the early hours but Day started with most people managing a little sleep. Today was about two things. Finding out more about the people behind the show and seeing artists in action. I managed to chat to a few key people and, although I’ll be doing a separate post about that next week, It’s easy to see why THU is such a special festival. None of the artists/speakers are paid and they don’t turn up, do their stuff and then leave. They get here early and stay…

Trojan Horse was a Unicorn – 1

Today THU started for real, with a full day of activities planned. Things kicked of early with the opening ceremony. For those of you who attended last year you will know that there was in the region of a hundred artists gather for the show. This year things have grown massively and the count so far is over 400 and most of them packed into the theatre for the start.   Things kicked off with the above animation by Techno Image who gave a ‘making of talk’ later in the day. The film was made in just a few…

Trojan Horse was a Unicorn – 0

By | event, news | No Comments

One of my favourite parts of working in this industry is the busy events schedule and this year I’ve been lucky enough to have been invited to Trojan Horse was a Unicorn, in Troia, Portugal. The show itself is aimed more at the artist, which in my view is a good thing, as the more techy side of things is catered for really well at other shows. The event itself starts tomorrow and the schedule is packed with talks, workshops and more. Check back as I will update this post at the end of each day, possibly the following…

Image Ireland

November isn’t just a time for growing socially aware comedy facial hair but is now time to learn some new skills. Image Ireland, the school for vfx artists, based in Dublin, is soon opening it’s doors to the Cinema 4D community and I will be there teaching the Mograph for VFX course. The course is designed with all experience levels in mind, with a starting few days getting the less experienced up to the speed of the more veteran user. Over four weeks you will learn many apsects of Cinema 4D and a fair chunk of After Effects, including using…

Old Beginnings

As of today, I am no longer a permanent, full time member of the 3D World team. And whilst I hope that you will still see my name and work in the magazine, it will be as a freelancer. It’s an odd parting for me, as I’m sad to not be keeping my usual seat warm on a daily basis, but happy in the knowledge that I’ve been part of a magazine that I love, ¬†and one that I hope to be involved in in the future. But leaving 3D World will give me more time to feed my…

B’Ars vfx festival

By | event, news, Review | No Comments

As part of my job I get to go to some of the best graphics conferences around the world, from the smaller Klik animation festival right through to Siggraph. I’ve spent the last few days at a brand new event and have come away both surprised and inspired. B’Ars Barcelona international arts and vfx fair is a new addition to the calendar but it managed to fill each day with great workshops, excellent speakers and some wonderful demos. A big draw for many, me included, was the headline speaker who is a heavyweight artist and designer, known globally for…
