By | cinematography, film, free, gear, Product, Review | No Comments

Hi all, if you are thinking about getting BlackMagic Design’s pocket cinema camera 4k, or you already have one, then this video might help. I share my thoughts on the top 5 accessories that will help you be a more efficient shooter who is able to get better footage. Although some of this is subjective and there are many other options out there I think the items I list work well and strike a good balance between quality and cost. The BMPCC4k is a great camera, with wonderful IQ but really benefits from a few simple add ons. For general…

FMX 2015 Creative showcasing

By | event, free, masters of cg, news, Review | No Comments

FMX, like almost all trade shows of any kind, is home to a large number of booths, where developers and resellers show off their latest and greatest. This is great and allows people to investigate possible options and talk to the people involved in their creation, before committing to investing any cold hard cash. What has been great to see though is a different approach to this kind of strategy from certain areas. Following on from last year at FMX the collaboration between HP, Cut & Paste, Intel and Wacom has continued and I think it’s the future. Rather than…

Syrp Magic Carpet

By | cinematography, gear, Product, Review | No Comments

While doing a spate of video production gear reviews I got my hands on a Magic Carpet from Syrp and I love it. I wont repeat myself by typing it all out here but you can head over to RGBHQ to watch the video and see a few photos. If you just want to see a few shots made with it check it out below. I shot this using the Canon C100 mk 2, with a 24-105 L f4. Graded in Premiere using Magic Bullet Colorista and Film.

Pixellab Pipes Generator

By | C4D, gear, news, Product, Review | No Comments

My buddy Joren Kandel, from the Pixel Lab, recently revealed his latest product, the Pipes Generator. This is one of those plugins that you probably never knew you needed but is both fun and useful. If you do any kind of archviz work, or use 3D environments at all then this could be really handy. If you want to see it in action I’ll be adding a video to this post, so you can see how it works and what can be done with it. Pop back for that or sign up to the newsletter for news on new reviews…

3D World 188 | reviews

By | C4D, news, Product, Review | No Comments

The latest issue of 3D World magazine sees a couple of pieces of my pieces, both in the review section. First up is a review of Cinema 4D R16. I’ve said a lot about the newest release from Maxon online but it’s great to see some print material, so have a read and see if you agree. It was also a nice way to resurrect the shiny stripy sphere, which I haven’t used in a long while but helped quickly highlight the new reflectance channel. As you may have noticed I’ve been getting into a lot of 3D printing…

Working with a Wacom Cintiq

By | C4D, gear, Review | No Comments

Although I’ve been using a tablet almost exclusively for ten years or so it’s only for the last 6 months that I’ve been using the Cintiq (although I did try the smaller Cintiq Companion last year) and I thought I would share a few of my working practices here. I use the Cintiq now for everything, from email and browsing to 3D animation and painting. The joy of the 24HD touch is how configurable it is, not just in terms of software but also as a physical object. Being able to have it vertical and use it as a monitor…

B’Ars vfx festival

By | event, news, Review | No Comments

As part of my job I get to go to some of the best graphics conferences around the world, from the smaller Klik animation festival right through to Siggraph. I’ve spent the last few days at a brand new event and have come away both surprised and inspired. B’Ars Barcelona international arts and vfx fair is a new addition to the calendar but it managed to fill each day with great workshops, excellent speakers and some wonderful demos. A big draw for many, me included, was the headline speaker who is a heavyweight artist and designer, known globally for…
